Creating Conditions for Thriving Individuals and Organizations: A Q&A with Magellan Federal’s Performance Coaches

Human connection is critical to improving performance and overall wellbeing in a sustainable way. This topic is the focus of the upcoming Magellan Federal webinar on Wednesday, July 19th. Leaders are encouraged to join Magellan Federal’s cognitive performance coaches for the webinar, Human Connection: Creating Conditions for Thriving Individuals & Organizations, to understand the indicators of thriving conditions, how connection drives those conditions, and learn strategies to help you implement them in your daily life.

Event panelists for this informative webinar included Dr. Jon Metzler, Senior Director of Human Performance; E. Kruise, Cognitive Performance Specialist; and Meg Helf, Cognitive Performance Specialist.

Q: Why do we need human connection? What are the benefits?

E. Kruise: Our brains are literally wired to connect and need connection for survival. Our brains will alert us when our need for connection is threatened. When we experience social pain our brains fire in the same way as when we experience physical pain, alerting us of the threat of disconnection. Just as pain alerts us when we are physically injured. When we are experiencing disconnection, we move into self-preservation mode and become self-focused; we are more likely in this mode to perceive others and the world around as threatening. As a result, we reinforce our feelings of disconnection. Furthermore, when we feel lonely, our sleep is impacted, our health is impacted. Loneliness increases our odds of an early death more than obesity, excessive drinking, or smoking 15 cigarettes a day. When we feel connected or a sense of belonging, we not only improve our own personal well-being and performance, but we also increase group cohesion, creativity, innovation, and the well-being and performance of the entire team.

Q: What are a few ways to create conditions for thriving individuals?

Meg Helf:

  • Self-awareness of our mindsets and how our bodies operate is a first step in understanding that other people, with different backgrounds and upbringings, hold different mindsets, and their bodies may have learned to operate differently. This deep inner self-work takes time.
  • At a baseline, prioritizing a culture of connection. Creating a sense of belonging by truly seeing each other. We can do this by approaching others with patience, curiosity, generosity, and vulnerability.
  • Model Humility and Curiosity – Demonstrate situational humility. Identify and share where you have gaps in knowledge, skills, or abilities. Share your areas of development and plan. Ask for help. Ask a lot of questions about others’ challenges, ideas, concerns, and feedback.
  • Encourage and praise Input and Initiative – Acknowledge and appreciate questions, ideas, concerns, or challenges shared by people. Encourage everyone to share. Praise an individual’s willingness to assess and then act independently on tasks or projects.
  • Provide vision and the “why” – Paint a clear picture of what success looks like. Emphasize purpose, what’s at stake, why it matters, and for whom. When people are able to connect their values and purpose to the task, goal, or project, we see an increase in motivation. Keep the purpose top of mind, discuss, and ask for clarity if uncertain.
  • Seek and provide effective feedback – Provide caring, direct, and honest feedback in a timely and consistent manner. Ask for caring, direct, and honest feedback and model effectively accepting that feedback. This demonstrates that we care about each other’s success and believe in their abilities.

Q: What are the signs that there is a thriving organizational condition within the workplace?

Kruise:

  • People value other’s unique interests, skill sets and abilities. In turn, people feel valued and a sense of belonging. They are empowered to bring their full authentic self.
  • People take risks because they are not afraid to fail. Failure is only an opportunity to grow, get better, produce a stronger solution, etc.
  • People speak up, share, and challenge each other.
  • People listen to and tune into others, not just what they are saying, but also how others are feeling.
  • People are taking initiative, proactive, present in the moment, and emotionally interested in their tasks.

Q: In May, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory calling loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection a public health crisis calling it a “Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation.” Do you agree or disagree that this is a public health crisis? Why?

Helf: Absolutely! Although the recent COVID pandemic has brought the awareness of isolation and loneliness into the spotlight, levels of social connection have been declining for decades. Our need as social beings is innate and ingrained in our fabric. Our ability to support each other and work together is what has made the advancement of our society possible. Mother Nature has made the bet that the best thing for our brains to do, at any given moment, is to see the world socially.

Unfortunately, various changes within our society have changed the way we develop and maintain relationships, how often we engage in meaningful connections, and with whom. Unlike the sensations of hunger, thirst, and pain, which alert us that our bodies need food, water, or care for injuries, many individuals are not as attuned to or aware of the sensations of social pain. Social pain is a real pain, alerting us that social connection is missing. Social pain literally appears on brain imaging the same as physical pain. Many of us, however, may not intuitively connect what we are feeling to the social disconnection that is driving us. Even if we are aware of our social disconnection, there is still a stigma around loneliness and may be difficult for individuals to discuss openly. Furthermore, when we experience social isolation and loneliness for long periods of time, we see a diminished ability to foster what we need most: deep meaningful connections. Social disconnection causes real changes to our brains and bodies. These changes manifest in our performance, health, cognitive functioning, longevity, and wellbeing. We, as a culture and community, need to prioritize connection at work, in our communities, and at home to reorient to what makes us function at our best: connection to other people.

Q: How does a lack of connectivity negatively impact wellbeing and productivity in the workplace?

Helf: When we don’t feel a true sense of belonging, we hide our authentic selves, we create a filter for our behavior. This impression management leads to hesitation. Instead of sharing ideas and asking questions, our focus is directed toward how we should act based on how we think we will be perceived. A culture of holding back leads to less efficiency, less innovation, and diminished performance.

Kruise: A lack of connection in the workplace increases the likelihood of individuals operating in self-preservation, or at least self-interest, mode. Thus, people are more focused on themselves and more likely to perceive what is going on around them as negative or a threat. This can lead to more conflict, less growth and development, less creativity and innovation, less collaboration, and ultimately performance suffers.

Your Body: More Than an Image in the Mirror

The body is an amazing instrument. Major organs work together to allow you to breathe, convert food into nutrients, move in space, reproduce, protect yourself or heal from illness, and perceive and make sense of the world around you. While the body is capable of so much, why do many individuals dislike their bodies? The answer to this question is more complicated than it may appear.

What is Body Image?

Body image is a term that describes thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions about one’s body (Hosseini & Padhy, 2022).

Specifically, body image is defined as:

  • How you see your body, including your height, shape, and weight, and individual body parts,
  • What you think and believe about your body,
  • How you feel about your body, and
  • What you do to address your feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions about your body.

Body image is an important component of overall wellbeing and influences how people function on a day-to-day basis. Body image exists along a negative/positive continuum and may change at any time. When realistic expectations, acceptance of and/or satisfaction with the body occur, a positive body image is experienced. Conversely, when thoughts, feelings and beliefs about the body are inconsistent with an ideal image one forms in their mind, a negative body image occurs (Office of Women’s Health, 2021; National Eating Disorders Association [NEDA], 2021).

How is Body Image formed?

The development of body image is a complex process. It begins in early childhood and evolves over time. The process consists of interactions between external and internal factors (Hosseini & Padhy, 2022; NEDA, 2021).

  • External Factors: Cultural/Environmental/Social—Messages from parents, siblings, peers, teachers, and the media influence beliefs and assumptions about the body. Comparisons to others coupled with a culture that focuses on beauty, perfection, and anti-aging may contribute to shaping opinions about the self. This is often seen on social media as it often perpetuates that beauty and perfection are the ultimate goals, with filters and editing tools creating a distorted reality. The constant bombardment of images promoting youthfulness can make individuals feel inadequate and self-conscious about their appearance. Traumatic experiences (accidents, sexual/physical assault, emotional neglect) may impact body image. Developmental milestones such as transitioning from child to adulthood, starting a family, dealing with adult children leaving home, and aging/retiring from work may increase the probability of fluctuating body images.
  • Internal Factors: Personality/Emotional/Psychological—Anxiety and depression, and personality characteristics such as perfectionism, rigid thinking, and high expectations of self may influence or reinforce body image.

Tips on Achieving and Maintaining a Positive Body Image

Your wellbeing is in part, dependent on your body image. Therefore, working towards and maintaining a positive body image benefits your physical and psychological health, as well as your relationships with others. These recommendations may help you in your journey (NEDA, 2021) toward an optimal body image.

  • Remember your body is merely the shell in which your emotional, physical, and spiritual person resides. Your body does not define you.
  • Take care of your body. To function properly, your body needs a consistent dose of nourishment, including food, physical activity, and social relationships.
  • When thoughts about your appearance start to overwhelm you, remind yourself of all the things your body can do. Your body allows you to move through space, view the world around you, problem-solve, experience different emotions, and connect with others.
  • Limit negative media influences: Unfollow sites that equate extreme body types (for example, very thin or very muscular) with happiness. This includes unfollowing people and influencers on social media that put a focus on unrealistic body images. Receive information on healthy dieting from your doctor, not the media. Observe the contents of advertisements with critical eyes and ears before making impulsive decisions to adopt the message or purchase the item.
  • Surround yourself with positive people and messages. Being with people you trust and receiving messages that inspire you help to prevent an unrealistic body image.

Be mindful of signs that may signal a path toward a negative body image. It is normal to engage in some of these behaviors every now and then. However, if you find that these activities are starting to interfere with or prevent you from accomplishing routine daily activities, it may be time to discuss these issues with your doctor. Avoid these behaviors:

  • Looking in the mirror multiple times a day.
  • Believing that happiness is equated to physical attractiveness.
  • Comparing your appearance to others.
  • Avoiding social situations because you are not attractive enough.
  • Wearing loose or bulky clothes to hide your body shape.
  • Engaging in extreme diets.
  • Declining invitations where eating is involved.
  • Refusing to be part of a photograph or editing photographs of yourself before sharing them.
  • Approaching hygiene needs or shopping for clothes with dread.
  • Feeling depressed or anxious, or having trouble concentrating after you eat.
  • Asking friends and family about their opinions regarding your appearance.

An ideal body is not measured by how you look. An ideal body is one that functions optimally and allows you to embrace what life has to offer. Slowly shifting your thoughts from self-criticism to ones of appreciation and respect may improve your overall wellbeing.

eMbrace the link between employee engagement and wellbeing

According to Gallup®, 70% of the population is struggling or suffering, and 70% of employees are not engaging at work. Investing in wellbeing at work is critical to the success of your employees and organization.

Organizations should care about wellbeing

Contrary to what many believe, wellbeing is not just about being happy or physically fit. Wellbeing encompasses all aspects of our lives:  how our lives are going, feeling good about our thoughts life experiences and what is important to us.

Poor wellbeing affects employees and organizations:

  • 75% of medical costs accrued are due to largely preventable conditions.
  • $20 million of additional lost opportunity for every 10,000 workers due to struggling or suffering employees.
  • $322 billion of turnover and lost productivity costs globally due to employee burnout.

 In contrast, employees with high wellbeing are more resilient during widespread or personal tough times, less likely to have unplanned days out of the office and more engaged than those with low wellbeing.

Traditional EAPs are not enough

Traditional Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) fall short because they average about 5% engagement and focus mainly on distressed employees. Low utilization and a reactive model leave a large gap to fill to meet the wellbeing needs of all employees. Organizations need a proactive program that benefits all employees.

5 ways to improve your wellbeing

Magellan Healthcare is a proud supporter of Mental Health Month in May. We are committed to increasing awareness about mental health, wellbeing, and the importance of recognizing and addressing concerns through our community outreach and innovative behavioral health services for members and providers.

Here are five things you can do every day to improve your mental health and wellbeing:

1. Connect
Build and strengthen relationships with the people around you. Meet up with friends, have lunch with a coworker or join a group in your community. Feeling close to and valued by others, including at work, is critical to boosting wellbeing. When we devote time to these relationships, we feel happier and more secure, giving us a better sense of purpose.

2. Be active
Look for ways to be active every day. Find something you enjoy that suits your fitness and mobility, like running, walking, gardening, dancing, and working on projects around the house. Being active every day causes changes in our brain which can positively affect our mood and decrease stress, depression, and anxiety.

3. Give
Carrying out acts of kindness for other people, whether small or large, can increase happiness, life satisfaction, and a general sense of wellbeing. Make someone a meal, help with a project, or volunteer at an organization. You could just ask a friend or someone you work with how they are and really listen to the answer. Giving back to others can create positive feelings and help us feel more satisfied with life.

4. Take notice
Be present in the here and now. Pay attention to the world around you, nature, people, and your thoughts and feelings. Becoming more aware of the present moment boosts our wellbeing by helping us enjoy the world we have around us and understanding ourselves better.

5. Keep learning
Practice new skills and seek information about topics that interest you. Try a new recipe, listen to a podcast or fix something in your home. Generally being curious and seeking out new experiences at work and in life can boost your confidence and self-esteem, help you build a sense of purpose, and connect with others.

Each of these five practices has been shown to make a positive difference in how we feel and live our life.

Spotlight Magellan Health: Kristen Ford

Kristen Ford, vice president of product innovation and development for behavioral health, has led many new innovative products being developed at Magellan Health. In her position, Ford is responsible for the product innovation and development activities for behavioral health solutions. Ford, who is based in Oregon, has worked for Magellan Health for 12 years on various innovation strategies focused on best-in-class services that help members live healthier lives. She is a Six Sigma Black Belt and a clinician who’s passionate about driving human-centered product development that changes lives. Most recently she’s helped to launch a full continuum population health wellbeing solution to improve population engagement into evidence-based care and improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare for those that are thriving, struggling or suffering. What cool, innovative products are you currently working on?

My responsibilities focus on new products that drive growth, leverage Magellan Health’s thought leadership, and enhance the lives of the people we serve. One example is the development of a comprehensive autism strategy where we are creating new mechanisms for timely access to autism screening with faster diagnosis to improve early intervention. We are laying the groundwork for new clinical models that intertwine technology, diagnostics, therapeutics and facilitate better coordinated care for the whole child.

We’re also working on other complex areas of healthcare such as suicide prevention. We care deeply about the recent increase in population suicide trends and our mission is to make suicide a never event. We do that through creating solutions that empower individuals with knowledge, education and tools in an environment of uninterrupted and supportive care.

Medical integration is another area of focus with our new collaborative care product which improves medical and behavioral health integration by making it easier for primary care physicians to diagnose and treat members’ behavioral health condition in the office. We’re looking at ways to solve important challenges in the delivery of behavioral healthcare by working on solutions that enable navigation, digital engagement, transform the delivery system and offer new models of care.

Can you expand on the work you’re doing with projects like Mightier, NeuroFlow and DUOS?

Mightier is a biofeedback gaming solution that teaches children emotional regulation to help them manage big emotions and teach calming strategies. This is important because it offers a bridge to care for children and families that are struggling. It’s been shown to be highly effective in randomized control trials for children with autism, ADHD, OCD or other similar conditions. It’s improved oppositional behaviors in children and decreased caregiver stress. We’re currently working with Mightier on a study through the National Institute of Mental Health to show that using this type of intervention can improve quality and cost of care.

We’re also working with NeuroFlow to deliver a collaborative care product, which expands Magellan’s value proposition with the ability to manage total cost of care. NeuroFlow brings the technology, and Magellan provides the clinical management which has resulted in a solution that is highly appreciated by our clients. We also launched the NeuroFlow population health app which provides digital wellbeing and self-care tools, including our digital cognitive behavioral therapy modules, to help members improve overall health and wellbeing, manage stress and build resilience in a confidential manner.

DUOS is an opportunity for us to address the social determinants of health and needs of older populations. DUOS provides a personal assistant for aging – a DUO – to help older adults stay healthy and age independently in their own homes. We connect older adults with social support and resources to manage social isolation, healthcare access and behavioral health needs. In our pilot results, we found that 97% of seniors were linked to resources to meet their needs and has high satisfaction with a net promoter score of 88.

Why is Magellan Health the best place to build new innovative products?

We are fortunate to have an executive leadership team that developed a culture that supports innovation. It’s part of our DNA. We have been successful in evolving our innovation strategy that positions Magellan as a thought leader and innovator in the behavioral health and wellbeing space. Our executive leadership believes that innovation is essential in treating the whole person, achieving growth and moving our business forward.

What are your thoughts on Magellan’s culture? How has that culture impacted the products you’ve worked on?

I think it’s a highly collaborative and team-oriented culture. Everyone is willing to roll up their sleeves and help achieve the best outcomes. The Magellan culture is purpose and mission driven. Everyone you encounter is focused on the best ways to support our customers, ensure members have the best experience and they’re getting the best care possible. I think that’s the picture of Magellan and it’s a wonderful place to work and drive innovation.

Currently, we have a pipeline of over 44 different products or product enhancements that we’d like to explore. People are familiar with Magellan’s culture of dedication and innovation. As a result, they are willing to collaborate and advise us as we drive towards solutions that can improve the lives of those members we serve.

What exciting trends in the healthcare industry have you noticed? What direction do you see healthcare going? What lessons are there to learn in other industries that can be applied to healthcare?

There are new trends in the field of autism related to clinical advancement and how we work with children on the spectrum as well as exciting developments and solutions in managing the total cost of care. There are new approaches that allow us to combine technology and clinical acumen deliver new care models. The pandemic created an environment where members and providers used new technologies and tools out of necessity which now provides us opportunity to continue to build and accelerate the adoption of new care models through technology. We are also seeing new and exciting opportunities to engage and activate members while reducing stigma.

Some industries can market directly and successfully engage the end user. We can learn from those industries and drive growth through that engagement.

We are fortunate that the Magellan leadership team and culture supports us in exploring those recent trends and solving for some of the most difficult challenges we see in service delivery.




Mental health is as important as physical health

Total wellbeing means that you feel fulfilled in all aspects of your life. Your mental health is a big part of your wellbeing. It is important to be aware of the signs or symptoms of mental stress so you can seek help or recognize when someone you care about may need help.

5 reasons why it is important to pay attention to your mental health and wellbeing

  1. Mental illness is more common than you think. Mental illness does not discriminate, it affects people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. One in five U.S. adults experience mental illness, 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness, and 17% of youth aged 6 – 17 experience a mental health condition. Unfortunately, too many don’t seek help.
  2. Mental illness affects your physical health. Your brain is part of your body. Mental and physical health are connected. In fact, mental illness can be the root of many physical symptoms. For example, if you are suffering from insomnia, heart palpitations, or fatigue, your doctor may want to rule out depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions as a potential cause.
  3. Diseases or injuries can increase your risk. Just as mental illness can cause physical symptoms in your body, physical diseases, like cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and trauma such as head injuries, can raise your risk of mental illness. It is important that you are honest about your experiences when speaking with your doctor.
  4. It runs in families. Mental illnesses tend to run in families due to both genetic factors and family cultural issues. Remember to include things like depression, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in your family health history along with information about heart disease, cancer, and other conditions.
  5. Early detection makes a difference. Like medical conditions, getting diagnosed early generally leads to better outcomes. Getting the help you need can prevent symptoms of mental illness from getting worse and causing negative effects on your life, including strained relationships and difficulty managing work and finances.

Spotlight Magellan Health: Sara Pierce

Finding solutions that allow individuals to improve their overall wellbeing has been Sara Pierce’s primary focus with the recent launch of eMbrace on April 1, 2022. As senior vice president of strategy and execution, Pierce has worked closely on the collaboration between Gallup and Magellan Health and the creation of the Magellan-Gallup Wellbeing Project. With over 10 years of experience working at Magellan, Pierce is a leader on the Growth Team where she’s responsible for the team’s Go-To Market strategy (GTM) and leads individuals on the sales operations, the sales training, and customer experience teams. Pierce, who is based in Connecticut, discusses her ongoing work with Gallup on projects including eMbrace, and how Magellan’s culture has been instrumental in its success.

What sort of innovative projects are you currently working on?

I think the most innovative and fun project I’m working on right now is related to our collaboration with Gallup. We’ve created the Magellan-Gallup Wellbeing Project, joining  forces to combine Magellan’s 50 years of behavioral health experience with Gallup’s industry-leading insights and research to understand how we can better meet the needs of individuals and improve their overall wellbeing. Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace Report tells us that roughly seven in 10 employees are struggling or suffering in their overall lives, with negative emotions at an all-time high. As an employer and a human this is deeply troubling to me.

eMbrace is a fully integrated, evidence-based solution for supporting members’ total wellbeing. We’re incorporating Gallup’s wellbeing assessment and then introducing different solutions or opportunities for employees to engage at all levels across the continuum depending on where they are in the six elements of wellbeing. In essence, we are breaking the silo that has until now separated employee assistance and clinical care, shifting an individual from coaching to employee assistance to clinical counseling based on what is happening in their life.

Do you have any other projects still in the planning phase?

We’re still in the thick of the recent eMbrace launch and it’s exciting that our own Magellan associates will be one of our first customers to utilize eMbrace. This provides us a valuable opportunity to “walk the walk” and to continuously learn from ourselves and our own team. At the same time, we are exploring how we can bring this important work to our health plan, public and Federals markets as well. This is only the beginning!

Why is Magellan Health the best place to do this project?

I think we are the perfect place to do this because of our over 50 years of deep clinical behavioral health experience. Our customers, whether they are employers, health plans, public or federal markets, all have one thing in common – they all have people who are struggling and suffering. The way I think about it, is if not us then who?

What are your thoughts on the culture here at Magellan Health? How has the culture at Magellan impacted your project?

I think one of the things that’s truly unique about Magellan’s culture is that everyone is singularly focused on our mission to help people. We take that very seriously. I think that’s a big part of who we are and why we do what we do and that it’s palpable. When you’re working on trying to solve big problems, it helps to bring it down to the individual level and understand that what we’re doing matters to a person, a family, and an employer. That culture informs everything we do.

What are some exciting trends you’ve noticed in the healthcare industry? What direction do you see healthcare going? What lessons are there to learn in other industries that can be applied to healthcare?

We are in unprecedented times in terms of the rise in unmet need. More and more, as an industry, we are coming up with unique ways to try and meet those needs. One example of that is by addressing people earlier on in the continuum so that we can intervene to prevent exacerbation of illness. Offering digital assessment tools and interventions is one way to try and address the unmet needs. But of course, we can’t make the mistake of letting the pendulum swing too far in any one direction. I believe that our customers want us to balance digital and in-person. The right tools to the right people at the right time.

I think one of the problems in healthcare is that the industry has not designed solutions with the user experience in mind. Meanwhile in all other aspects of our lives, our tolerance for bad experiences is getting smaller every day. Our cell phones are continuously upgraded to improve our user experience. Products and services are marketed directly to us based on knowledge of our preferences, and we have countless choices in entertainment, retail, and restaurants. User experience is king in everything other than healthcare. For too long consumers of healthcare have been trapped with few choices. The good news is that every day I see more evidence that this is changing but we have miles to go before we rest.

Beating the holiday blues

The holidays can be a joyous time—a time to spend with family and friends, reflect, and be thankful. Yet, for many people, the holiday season can bring on the blues, including feelings of anxiety, stress, worry, and sadness. These feelings may even be worse for those who have experienced divorce, lost a loved one, or are living far away from family and friends.

The holiday blues

A 2014 survey conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) found that the holidays contribute to feelings of sadness or dissatisfaction. Of those surveyed:

  • 63% reported there was too much pressure
  • 57% stated they had unrealistic expectations
  • 66% reported experiencing loneliness
  • 50% were unable to be with loved ones
  • 55% found themselves remembering happier times in the past contrasting with the present
  • 68% reported feeling financially strained

While the holiday blues are different from mental illness, it can lead to clinical anxiety and depression. It is important that we do not ignore these feelings, especially as we all continue to deal with changes wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic but deal with them in a proactive and healthy manner.

Tips for beating the holiday blues

  1. Throw guilt out the window. Try not to put unreasonable pressure on yourself to be happy or enjoy the holidays and avoid overanalyzing your interactions with others. Give yourself an emotional and mental break this holiday season.
  2. Be realistic and try not to expect the “ideal” holiday. Keep expectations for the holiday season manageable by not trying to make the holiday “the best.” Be truthful to yourself and others about what you can and cannot do. And remember, nobody has a perfect holiday or perfect family.
  3. Give to others. Volunteering somewhere, like a soup kitchen, food bank, children’s group home or facility for the elderly can fill you with feelings of love and pride. You will spend time with others and immerse yourself in the true spirit of the holiday season.
  4. Stay connected. Schedule phone calls or virtual gatherings with your favorite folks where you can open gifts together, sing songs and reminisce. Spending time with those who love and value you can be very comforting and help ground everyone involved.
  5. Acknowledge the past yet look toward the future. Change is a constant part of life. If your holidays are not like they used to be, it is OK. Cherish the memories and remember everything does not have to be like past holidays for you to enjoy the season.
  6. Make a budget. Budgeting at the start of the season for holiday shopping and expenses is one of the most effective ways to alleviate stress. It helps prevent accidental overspending and allows you to manage expectations.
